Ahhhh… NIN does a bunch of “goodbye” shows in NYC, and I manage to go to both of the Terminal 5 concerts. 

It was a difficult situation, as Trent doesn’t have any issues with photography/videography so of course there were tons of people fighting to get a good angle.  I spent maybe two songs in the middle of the GA floor before giving up and watching from the back of the venue drinking overpriced beer and listening to some other photographer tell me I can’t possibly get any usable shots with the “slow” zoom lens I was using.

What’s sad is that my “slow” zoom lens has managed to get me decent, if not really nice, shots at nearly every show I’ve attended since I got it.  I actually purchased that lens (an EF-S 55-250mm F/3.5-5.6 IS) specifically to shoot the NIN/JA show I managed to make it to in Homdel, NJ, where I shot from the lawn seating.  Sure, it’s cheap (approx $200 USD), but you’d be surprised how useful it is when you’re dealing with really bright stage lights, or in decent sunlight.

It’s never going to be about having the BEST equipment.  Never let anyone tell you what you can or cannot do.  I always feel that people who have something nasty or condescending or negative to say to you while you are trying to do your art are usually so insecure about their own efforts that they feel the need to try and come down on someone else (as this makes them feel superior, perhaps?).  This happens to me now and again, and generally I shrug it off and move along.  I guess this night stuck with me since the place was crazy packed, and the dude was, of course, standing right next to me with his rig the whole night.  In the end, sure I didn’t get a lot of fantastic shots… but I got a few worth keeping and of course it was a kick ass show…
